Three Minneapolis police officers wounded in downtown shooting, suspect dead

Résumé

A downtown Minneapolis shooting left three police officers injured, three civilians dead and four others hospitalized; authorities said the suspected gunman was killed at the scene.

Three police officers were among the victims of a downtown Minneapolis shooting on Wednesday that also claimed three civilian lives and injured four more, officials said. Minneapolis Police Department Sergeant Garrett Parten told a news conference that the suspected gunman was deceased, though the cause of his death was not yet known. The injured officers suffered wounds to the shin and abdomen, according to sources.

Seven patients were transported to Hennepin Healthcare Medical Center, where three required surgery for gunshot injuries. The incident prompted a heightened police presence, with state officials and federal agencies, including the ATF and the FBI, responding to assist local law enforcement.

"My public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place downtown Minneapolis this afternoon," Governor Tim Walz wrote on X, adding that state officials were on the ground to support local authorities.

"My deepest thoughts are with those killed and hurt, including the police officers injured," Attorney General Keith Ellison said, offering the department assistance.

"My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones," Governor candidate Amy Klobuchar said after speaking with Mayor Jacob Frey.

The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police posted on social media that two Minneapolis officers were shot while answering the call and expressed support for the wounded and their families. University of St. Thomas locked down its Minneapolis campus as a precaution, and city officials later confirmed the area was secure with no ongoing threat.
