Clippers face long-term setbacks after Kawhi Leonard deal and NBA penalties

Resumen

The Los Angeles Clippers' 2019 trade for Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, along with recent salary-cap violations, have resulted in multiple lost draft picks and fines, leaving the franchise with limited assets for the coming years.

Los Angeles agreed to acquire Kawhi Leonard in 2019 on the condition that the team also obtain Paul George, sending a package that included Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, several first-round picks and pick swaps to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Over four seasons, the Leonard-George pairing produced three playoff series wins and a single Western Conference finals appearance, with Leonard missing the 2021-22 season due to an ACL tear.

The NBA recently announced penalties against the Clippers for salary-cap circumvention related to the Leonard transaction. The sanctions include the loss of five future first-round draft picks, fines and suspensions for front-office personnel, while Leonard was fined $700,000.

The assets transferred to Oklahoma City have since become key contributors for the Thunder. Gilgeous-Alexander developed into a two-time MVP, and the Thunder used the acquired draft picks to select players such as Jalen Williams, who became an All-Star and part of a championship team. Additional picks have been traded multiple times, further depleting the Clippers' draft capital.

Looking ahead, the Clippers are scheduled to forfeit several first-round selections spanning 2029 through 2033, as well as their own 2030 pick, due to the league’s penalties and prior trade commitments. The combination of the costly 2019 trade and the recent sanctions leaves the franchise with limited opportunities to rebuild through the draft.

"The penalties reflect the seriousness of the cap-circumvention violations and will impact the Clippers' ability to acquire young talent in the coming years," a league spokesperson said.

Analysts note that the loss of multiple high-value picks and the departure of Leonard could extend the team's rebuilding timeline.
