Filmmaker says insider portrays Elon Musk as unhappy
A documentary previewed by The Hollywood Reporter includes an insider’s view that Elon Musk feels personal dissatisfaction, while the film also examines his political activities.
Filmmaker Alex Gibney’s upcoming documentary on Elon Musk, scheduled to debut this fall, features commentary from a close associate who described the billionaire as feeling unhappy. The film, which was previewed for The Hollywood Reporter, explores Musk’s influence on American politics, including his financial support for President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign and his involvement in political town halls in swing states.
The documentary also addresses Musk’s ownership of the social media platform X and the data it holds on millions of Americans, noting that the extent of his use of that information remains unclear. It references Musk’s past leadership of a group referred to as the “DOGE” squad, which was involved in changes to USAID programs abroad.
"Musk does it all to fill the bleakness he feels within himself," the source quoted by Gibney said.
The film mentions a public dispute between Musk and Trump, including a deleted post by Musk alleging Trump’s involvement in a high-profile legal case, which was later removed without further comment.
