U.S. Mint to Release $1 Trump Coin on Sept. 2

Resumen

The Treasury will sell a $1 gold-colored coin featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait, marking the first time a living U.S. president appears on currency in over a century.

The United States Mint announced that a $1 gold-colored coin bearing President Donald Trump’s official White House portrait will go on sale on Sept. 2 at 12 p.m. ET. The Treasury said 250,000 coins will be minted with a “July 4” privy mark to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary. Collectors can buy a bag of 100 coins for $154.50 or a roll of 25 for $61.00.

The release follows a Treasury proposal for additional Trump-themed currency, including a $250 bill and a 24-karat gold commemorative coin. Critics have cited a federal statute that traditionally permits only deceased individuals on U.S. currency, though the Treasury referenced a 2020 law that allows a special $1 coin for the semiquincentennial.

President Calvin Coolidge was the last sitting executive to appear on U.S. money, featured on a half-dollar in 1926. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, a nonpartisan advisory body, declined to review the new designs, arguing that featuring a sitting president conflicts with founding principles.

Although described as a gold coin, the Treasury clarified that the token does not contain precious metal but has a “gold-like finish.”
