Ukraine security service says its officers fired weapons during Kyiv standoff with defence intelligence personnel
The Security Service of Ukraine reported that its agents used firearms after being attacked while conducting an investigation in Kyiv, detaining several defence forces members and seizing weapons and documents.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) said its officers were assaulted while carrying out urgent investigative actions at 10 Shumskoho Street in Kyiv, prompting a special forces unit from the SSU’s Alpha Centre to respond with firearms. The agency reported that a group attempted to block the investigation using vehicles and opened fire on the SSU team, leading to injuries among the attackers and the detention of several individuals identified as members of a Ukrainian defence forces unit. Weapons and documents were seized from the detainees.
The Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a pre-trial investigation into alleged threats and an attempted killing of law-enforcement personnel, stating that all circumstances of the incident are being examined and the legal classification of the participants’ actions will be determined.
The episode follows recent reports of a separate abduction claim involving a Russian Volunteer Corps deputy commander and a prior joint SSU-Defence Intelligence (DIU) operation that allegedly thwarted a terrorist plot against a Russian opposition figure. Police cordoned off the area, and sources indicated that three DIU officers were injured during the confrontation.
