Jury remains deadlocked in Lindsay Clancy trial as deliberations continue

Résumé

A Massachusetts jury has again reported an inability to reach a unanimous verdict in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of killing her three children while suffering from postpartum psychosis. The judge warned of a possible mistrial if the impasse persists.

Jurors in the Lindsay Clancy case returned to deliberations for a sixth day on Thursday, again indicating they could not agree on a verdict. The 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse is charged with murdering her three children in 2023, a crime she does not dispute, but her defense argues that postpartum psychosis drove her actions. Prosecutors maintain she acted with knowledge of her conduct.

Judge William Sullivan questioned the jurors about any recent events that might affect their impartiality, received negative responses, and then sent them back to the deliberation room. He later issued a standard “dynamite charge,” urging jurors to reconsider opposing viewpoints without abandoning their convictions, a practice used to break deadlocks.

If the jury remains unable to reach a unanimous decision, Sullivan may declare a mistrial, returning the case to its pre-trial status. Prosecutors would then decide whether to pursue a new trial with a different jury or consider a plea agreement, according to Boston defense attorney Brad Bailey.

The trial has attracted significant public attention, with supporters wearing pink shirts and delivering letters of encouragement to Clancy. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington said he has prepared additional witnesses should a second trial be required. Meanwhile, a separate incident involving a supporter arrested for filming jurors prompted the judge to reiterate court orders prohibiting any contact with jurors.
