Massachusetts gaming commission investigates Bill Simmons' proxy sports betting

Resumen

Bill Simmons admitted on his podcast that he let his daughter’s boyfriend place bets for him in Massachusetts, prompting a probe by the state gaming commission and a response from FanDuel.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said it is reviewing allegations that Bill Simmons allowed a third party to place wagers on his FanDuel account, a practice prohibited under state law and the operator’s terms. Commission chair Jordan Maynard said the matter is with “the proper staff members” and that the commission will take appropriate action after a hearing.

FanDuel confirmed it had voided the bets and taken “action” on Simmons’ account, citing compliance with its terms and state regulations. The company declined to detail the specific measures, noting its policy of not commenting on individual accounts.

During a recent episode of his Ringer podcast, Simmons explained that he had given his daughter’s boyfriend, who had turned 21, access to his account while he was in Los Angeles. He said he was unaware that proxy betting is illegal in Massachusetts and described the incident as a “lesson learned.”

State regulations require bettors to refrain from allowing anyone else to use their wagering accounts, and operators may suspend or close accounts when violations are identified. The commission’s investigation could also result in the boyfriend being placed on a prohibited bettors list.
