U.S. Diesel Prices Surge 50% Since Last Year, Raising Concerns Over Economic Impact

The average price of diesel in the United States has risen from $3.70 to $5.60 per gallon, a 50% increase that could affect transportation costs, freight rates and consumer prices.

The average price of diesel fuel in the United States has climbed to about $5.60 a gallon, up from $3.70 a year ago, according to recent market data. Analysts warn that the 50% jump could ripple through the economy because diesel powers a wide range of essential services, including freight trucks, school buses, agricultural equipment and rail transport.

Experts on a recent automotive podcast linked the price surge to disruptions in global fuel supplies. They cited the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has reduced Russia’s refined-fuel output after several drone attacks on refineries, and the limited flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping chokepoint. Both factors have tightened the global diesel market, raising prices for U.S. buyers.

"Global refinery capacity outages are currently about 60% higher than the seasonal average, which is putting sustained pressure on diesel supplies," one commentator noted.

The United States has not added new refining capacity since the 1970s, relying instead on upgrades to existing plants. Building new refineries requires billions of dollars and several years, limiting the ability to quickly offset supply shortfalls.

Industry observers estimate that higher diesel costs could add thousands of dollars to the operating expenses of a single semi-truck each month, with fleet operators facing potentially millions in additional outlays. Those costs are expected to be passed on to consumers through higher freight charges, which could affect the price of goods ranging from groceries to manufactured products.

School districts and municipal services that operate diesel-powered buses are also vulnerable. A medium-sized district could see hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra fuel expenses, potentially forcing cuts elsewhere in budgets.

While diesel prices are approaching the 2022 peak of $5.82 per gallon, analysts say the current situation is more complex because it is driven by multiple, overlapping geopolitical and supply-chain issues rather than a single event.

The sustained rise in diesel costs comes as households prepare for the holiday shopping season, raising concerns that higher transportation expenses may contribute to broader inflationary pressures.
