Southern California battles extreme heat, humidity and lingering surf hazards

Weather officials warned that extreme heat above 100 °F and unusually high humidity persisted across Southern California, prompting health advisories through and limited relief until. Scientists said the summer’s dew points were the highest in 46 years, a pattern they linked to moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Marie, an El Niño episode and unusually warm Pacific waters.

Earlier forecasters had noted that a ridge of high pressure combined with that moisture would keep the region humid and hot into early next week, leading to heat advisories for several counties. The offshore storm also produced 6-8-foot swells, strong rip currents and localized flooding, causing beach closures and damage to dozens of homes along the Orange County coastline.
