Apple launches AirPods 5 with enhanced noise cancellation and audio features

Résumé

Apple unveiled the AirPods 5, adding active noise cancellation to its entry-level earbuds and pricing the base model at $129, with a higher-priced version offering additional features.

Apple announced the AirPods 5, the company’s first entry-level wireless earbuds to include Active Noise Cancellation. The base model starts at $129 and is said to block up to 50% more external noise than the previous generation AirPods 4 with ANC. Apple also highlighted a redesigned acoustic architecture and an updated Adaptive EQ that aim to deliver richer, more detailed sound, while an improved Transparency mode is intended to make surrounding voices sound more natural.

Both versions feature Adaptive Audio, which automatically balances noise cancellation and Transparency, and Conversation Awareness, which reduces playback volume when the wearer begins speaking. When paired with a compatible iPhone running Apple Intelligence, the earbuds support Live Translation.

A $149 variant includes a wireless-charging case, swipe-based volume controls on the stems, and longer battery life, offering up to five hours of listening with ANC active and up to 22 hours total with the case. The case supports Apple Watch, Qi, and USB-C charging.

Preorders for the AirPods 5 began today, with shipments expected to start on September 18.
