Rising temperatures broaden waterborne pathogen risk in North Carolina

North Carolina health officials said on 7 September that rising freshwater and coastal water temperatures are extending the season during which harmful algae, Naegleria fowleri amoebas and Vibrio bacteria can thrive, although most tested recreational sites still met safety standards. The warning follows a series of fatal Naegleria infections earlier in the month, including the death of a 15-year-old teenager on 31 August and a 17-year-old from Burlington who also died after contracting the brain-eating amoeba. State health agencies had previously cautioned swimmers and seafood consumers about the risks of these pathogens ahead of Labor Day.
