Authorities said the body of 5-year-old Saylor Hayes was recovered around 9:45 a.m. on Monday in water near the location where she was last seen on Pawleys Island. The child had wandered away from a rental home in the Hagley Estates area on Sunday afternoon. The search involved the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Charleston Sheriff’s Office, state law enforcement, and fire departments from Horry, Midway and Georgetown counties, as well as local residents who combed nearby properties and docks.

"The body of missing 5-year-old Saylor Hayes, who has been the subject of an intensive search involving hundreds of people and multiple agencies, was found this morning," a department spokesperson said.
