Google Maps updates lake name to "Lake America" following U.S. government rename
Google Maps now shows "Lake America" for U.S. users after the Interior Department officially changed the name of Lake Ontario, a move tied to a recent executive order.
Google Maps has begun labeling the body of water formerly known as Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users located in the United States. The change follows an update by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, which recorded the new name after an executive order directed the Interior Department to rename the lake.
Google said the revision reflects its policy of aligning map labels with official government sources. Users in Canada will continue to see "Lake Ontario," while users elsewhere will see both names displayed.
White House communications director Steven Cheung posted on X that the change was "official," confirming the new label on the platform.
The rename coincides with heightened trade tensions between the United States and Canada, including recent tariff measures imposed by both countries.
