Eight Dead and About 20 Missing After Ferry Capsizes Near Kyrenia
The Turkish Interior Ministry said on 31 August that eight people were dead and about 20 passengers remained missing after a ferry traveling from Kyrenia to Turkey capsized off the northern coast of Cyprus. The vessel, which had departed Kyrenia with roughly 260 passengers, sank on 30 August. Early reports from CNN and AP cited at least seven fatalities and more than 230 rescued.
Subsequent updates from Turkish authorities and the Northern Cyprus coastguard raised the death toll to eight, reported that 19 survivors were hospitalized, and indicated that 18 to 20 passengers were still unaccounted for. Authorities also arrested several crew members as the search continued.
