Eight Dead and Twenty Missing After Cyprus Ferry Capsizes Near Kyrenia

Summary

A ferry traveling from Kyrenia to Turkey capsized off northern Cyprus, killing at least eight people and leaving about 20 passengers missing, while rescue teams continue search operations.

A ferry carrying 267 passengers and crew capsized off the northern coast of Cyprus on Sunday, resulting in at least eight fatalities and roughly 20 people still missing, authorities said. The vessel departed Kyrenia bound for the Turkish port of Taşucu and began taking on water about 15 minutes after leaving port, prompting it to overturn.

Coast guard units and nearby ships rescued survivors from the water and from the overturned hull. Officials later raised the missing count from 18 to 20 after cross-checking passenger lists with the survivors.

Among the missing are siblings Miray Bicer, 12, and Mehmet Asaf Bicer, 6, who were on holiday with their family. Their mother, Ayten Bicer, recounted trying to hold onto her daughter as the ferry rolled, saying the child urged her not to let go.

The wreck lies in water over 1,600 feet deep, complicating recovery efforts. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman said a Turkish vessel equipped for seabed work is expected to arrive on Tuesday to assist. The cause of the sinking is under investigation; nine individuals linked to the ferry's operation have been detained, though the ship held a valid seaworthiness certificate.

Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Ütel attributed the incident to adverse weather, while Erhurman cautioned that conditions were not severe and warned against premature speculation. The internationally recognised Cypriot government has offered assistance with the ongoing search and rescue operation.
