Russia delays Donbas takeover to 2027 as Ukraine reports fresh strikes

On 8 September, the Kyiv Post reported that Russia announced it had pushed its deadline for full control of the Donbas region to 31 March 2027, while Ukraine said Russian missile and drone strikes killed five people in Kyiv and that Ukrainian drones hit a refinery in Saratov. Earlier in August, Ukrainian officials said, citing TWZ, that a surge of Russian drone attacks triggered the longest daily air-raid alert since the war began, and Fox News reported the agriculture minister that about 90 % of retail food logistics had been destroyed. AP News described a continuous 12-hour aerial assault on Kyiv that killed at least a dozen civilians. Euronews, Yahoo News Canada and DW reported President Volodymyr Zelensky’s warnings that Russian airspace had become unsafe for civilian flights, urging airlines to avoid it.

The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian forces captured roughly 90 sq km in August while Ukrainian counter-offensives reclaimed about 130 sq km, and that Russian casualties exceeded 42,000, contradicting President Vladimir Putin’s claims of rapid gains. Kyiv Post, AP News and The Daily Beast reported that Ukrainian drones struck Russian oil facilities, warehouses and airports, causing fuel shortages, flight cancellations and domestic criticism of President Putin ahead of the September parliamentary election. AP News also reported a Russian drone hitting the Ukrainian security service headquarters in Kyiv, wounding twelve, and The Guardian reported the resignation of Ukraine’s prosecutor general amid anti-corruption raids as Russia resumed missile strikes on Kyiv.
