Russian jet-powered drones intensify attacks on Kyiv and surrounding cities

Resumen

Russian forces have carried out a fifth consecutive day of air strikes on Kyiv and nearby towns, targeting warehouses and other infrastructure with jet-powered drones, while Ukrainian officials say they are working to counter the threat.

Russian air raids continued for a fifth straight day on Monday, with jet-powered drones striking warehouses in Kyiv and the surrounding region, leaving some supermarket shelves empty. The attacks have disrupted daily life and logistics, and four people were wounded in the towns of Brovary and Boryspil, regional military administrator Tymur Tkachenko said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s current tactic is to wear down the Ukrainian population. He also noted that between Thursday and Sunday Russia launched almost 1,500 drones, about 800 of which were jet-powered, and that Ukraine is developing interceptor drones, with four companies working on the technology and one showing the most success.

Education officials warned that the destruction of publishing houses has destroyed roughly one million textbooks, potentially delaying the start of the school year. Zelenskyy’s adviser Serhii Beskrestnov reassured the public that Ukraine will not face food shortages, urging people not to spread rumors and noting that European partners stand ready to assist if needed.

In the north, a massive overnight drone attack damaged an energy facility in the Chernihiv region, according to regional administrator Viacheslav Chaus. The Russian Defense Ministry said it is preparing further large-scale strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Russia reported shooting down 239 Ukrainian drones over its territory and occupied Crimea, while Ukrainian forces claimed a missile strike on Belgorod that killed three people and a drone attack in Yekaterinburg that wounded four.

"Right now, Russia’s tactic is to wear down Ukraine and Ukrainians — first and foremost, our people," Zelenskyy wrote on social media.

"Importantly, the dialogue between negotiating teams of the U.S. and Ukraine continues all the time, and now we are talking about locking in the dates for the visit to Ukraine," Zelenskyy added.

U.S. diplomatic efforts to mediate the conflict remain stalled, though Zelenskyy said he had a constructive conversation with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
