Apple Announces John Ternus as New CEO as Tim Cook Moves to Executive Chairman Role
Tim Cook will step down as Apple CEO on September 1 after 15 years, remaining as executive chairman, while hardware chief John Ternus is set to take over.
Apple said its chief executive Tim Cook will relinquish the CEO post on September 1, ending a 15-year tenure that began in August 2011. Cook will stay with the company as executive chairman of the board, where he will focus on areas such as engagement with global policymakers.
John Ternus, currently senior vice president of hardware engineering, is slated to become Apple’s next chief executive. The company highlighted its strong financial position, noting recent quarterly revenue records.
"It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple," Cook said in a statement, adding that he is grateful for the team’s work.
"John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor," Cook added.
"I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve in the years to come," Ternus said.
Apple’s leadership transition follows a period of product launches that included the Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, Vision Pro, Apple Music, and Apple TV.
