Detroit Lions evaluate 16 players for final roster spots ahead of preseason finale
Coach Dan Campbell said the Lions must decide on several roster spots before their final preseason game, with 16 players still competing for a place on the 53-man roster.
Coach Dan Campbell indicated that the Lions need to have most roster decisions settled before their preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts, given the short window between the game on Saturday and the roster-cut deadline on Sunday.
The backup quarterback position remains open after Teddy Bridgewater’s retirement, with rookie Luke Altmyer and veteran Josh Dobbs both in contention. Wide receiver depth is also being tested, as the team looks to fill a fifth or sixth spot behind its four established starters. Tay Martin, who has contributed on both offense and special teams, is viewed as a leading candidate, while veteran Tom Kennedy offers versatility and return-skill value.
Tight end Jackson Meeks, a fourth-string option, must prove his worth on special teams to retain his spot. On the offensive line, injuries have created uncertainty at center, giving Mason Miller a chance to earn a roster place after taking second-team reps in camp.
Defensive line depth is strong, with nose tackle Chris Smith, pass-rushing defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo and versatile lineman Ben Stille all vying for the final defensive line slots. Linebacker depth is also in question after injuries; Troy Reeder, Joe Bachie, Erick Hunter and Amen Ogbongbemiga have each received praise for their defensive and special-teams contributions.
In the secondary, cornerbacks Ennis Rakestraw and Roger McCreary are both on the bubble, with McCreary showing solid preseason performances and Rakestraw seeking a strong finish to secure a roster spot.
