Bill Maher Faces Backlash Over Dolly Parton Death Joke on HBO
HuffPost reported that on August 30, comedian Bill Maher faced backlash after his August 28 Real Time monologue referenced Dolly Parton's death and her physical appearance, drawing criticism from public figures and social-media users. Variety described the segment as a weak tribute, while Deadline noted Maher’s joke about a landmark lighting that alluded to the singer’s physique and mentioned the wave of tributes she received. The Hollywood Reporter added that the monologue was met with negative reactions as other celebrities offered their own tributes.
The Independent later reported that Maher suggested the media’s focus on Parton's passing was disproportionate compared with the U. S. –Canada trade dispute, prompting mixed reactions.
