Actress Shailene Woodley told the SAG-AFTRA Foundation that she discovered a year after shooting that her scenes as Mary Jane Watson would not appear in the 2014 release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Woodley said she had filmed three scenes with co-star Andrew Garfield before being informed that the character would be omitted. She explained that the studio decided to wait for the death of Emma Stone’s character Gwen Stacy before introducing Mary Jane, but ultimately chose not to include the storyline, fearing it would create confusion with another love interest for Peter Parker.
Producer Matt Tolmach later said the film’s 148-page script was trimmed because the Mary Jane subplot exceeded the story they could tell. Woodley added that she was told the decision was based on narrative considerations, though she acknowledged she could not rule out other factors. The interview also touched on Woodley’s other recent projects, including "Divergent," "Dumb Money," "The Descendants," "The Fault in Our Stars," HBO’s "Big Little Lies," and Hulu’s "Paradise" season two.
