ICE officer released on bond after pleading not guilty to false statements
A federal judge in Texas ordered the release of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Christian Castro on a $75,000 bond after he pleaded not guilty to six counts of making false statements to the FBI about a January 2023 shooting of a Venezuelan immigrant in Minneapolis on 4 September. The indictment that led to the case was handed down on 25 August, charging Castro with assault and false-reporting in Minnesota.
Earlier, Minnesota officials had sought his extradition from Texas, but judges in both districts denied the request, allowing his detention to lapse after the statutory 90-day limit. The Justice Department had previously weighed additional federal charges, and a federal prosecutor involved in the investigation was later dismissed.
