Astros dismiss GM Dana Brown amid playoff push

Resumen

Houston owner Jim Crane fired general manager Dana Brown after a six-loss stretch left the team tied for first in the AL West, saying a change was needed to keep playoff hopes alive.

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown was dismissed on Monday after the team lost six of its last eight games, including a 7-6 loss to the Oakland Athletics in which a six-run lead was surrendered. Owner Jim Crane said the performance convinced him that drastic action was required to preserve the club’s postseason chances.

The termination was presented as a mutual parting, with Brown informed of the decision on Sunday night and departing for his home in New Jersey on Monday. In a statement, Brown thanked Crane for the opportunity and expressed gratitude for his four seasons in Houston.

The Astros, who sit at 65-66 and are tied for first place in the AL West, will retain manager Joe Espada for the remainder of the season, though his contract status after the year remains undecided. Crane is expected to hold a news conference on Tuesday in New York to explain the firing and outline the organization’s next steps.

The club will search for a full-time general manager in the offseason, with potential candidates mentioned from the Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians. Internal options include senior adviser Jeff Bagwell, assistant general manager Charles Cook and other front-office staff.

Brown becomes the third general manager in the American League West to lose his job this season, joining the Athletics’ David Forst and the Angels’ Perry Minasian. An AL executive remarked, "I’ve never seen anything like it. Three GMs fired in one division. Unreal."
