NASA launches Roman Space Telescope to L2 for exoplanet and dark-energy surveys
NASA announced on 2 September that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope had successfully launched on 30 August from Kennedy Space Center and was on its trajectory to the Sun-Earth L2 point, beginning its five-year mission to map the sky and study dark energy, dark matter and exoplanets. The launch used a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, delivering the 2. 4-meter infrared observatory with a field of view about 100 times larger than Hubble’s. NASA said the telescope’s wide-field camera will survey billions of galaxies and detect thousands of distant exoplanets.
Japan’s space agency JAXA will contribute scientific instruments and operate a ground-station in Nagano to support the mission. The $4-4. 3 billion project follows years of development and aims to improve measurements of the universe’s expansion.
