Live-action/animation hybrid "Coyote vs Acme" releases amid mixed expectations
"Coyote vs Acme," a live-action and animated Looney Tunes film focusing on Wile E. Coyote, has been released by Ketchup Entertainment. Critics note its emphasis on characters beyond Bugs Bunny and its integration of cartoon and live-action elements.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s "Coyote vs Acme," a live-action/animation hybrid featuring Looney Tunes characters, opened in theaters this week after distribution was taken over by independent company Ketchup Entertainment. The film centers on Wile E. Coyote, portraying him as a more developed protagonist rather than the traditional perpetual pursuer.
The screenplay, written by Samy Burch with contributions from James Gunn and Jeremy Slater, blends classic cartoon humor with a contemporary narrative. Eric Bauza provides the voices for most male Looney Tunes characters, continuing his role as a primary voice talent for the franchise.
While Bugs Bunny appears briefly, the story primarily follows the coyote and includes cameo appearances by other iconic characters such as Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. Reviewers have highlighted the film’s approach to integrating animated figures into a realistic setting, drawing comparisons to earlier hybrid movies.
"The integration of cartoons into a lived-in world allows the film to treat Looney Tunes characters as actors within the story rather than mere cameos," said a spokesperson for Ketchup Entertainment.
The movie’s release comes as the studio explores additional Looney Tunes projects, including a planned Speedy Gonzales film. Industry observers will watch box-office performance to gauge audience appetite for Looney Tunes titles that focus on characters other than Bugs Bunny.
