Apple unveils M6 chip, hints at performance gains for upcoming iPhone 18 Pro

Résumé

Apple introduced its M6 processor for new Mac mini and Mac Studio models, indicating that the forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro's A20 Pro chip will use a 2-nanometer process and likely deliver notable performance and efficiency improvements.

Apple announced the M6 chip today as the processor for its latest Mac mini and Mac Studio, marking the first product in a new generation that will also include the iPhone 18 Pro's upcoming A20 Pro chip. The company said the M6 is built on a 2-nanometer process, which increases transistor density and is expected to provide a "major leap in performance and power efficiency."

The M6 features a 12-core CPU complex—two more cores than its predecessor—comprising two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. Apple claims it delivers the fastest single-threaded performance in the world and up to 1.2 times faster multi-threaded performance compared with the M5. It also introduces a dual 16-core Neural Engine, offering up to double the peak compute of earlier generations for on-device AI tasks.

Because the M6 and the A20 Pro belong to the same chip family, analysts expect similar architectural changes to appear in the iPhone 18 Pro's processor. While the exact core count and neural engine configuration for the A20 Pro have not been confirmed, the use of the 2-nanometer technology is projected to bring substantial gains in both speed and energy efficiency when the iPhone is launched in the coming weeks.

"M6 is built using cutting-edge 2 nm process technology, packing greater transistor density into a smaller die for a major leap in performance and power efficiency," Apple said in its newsroom release.
