Bills coach clarifies Ed Oliver's absence stems from family tragedy, not injury
Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver missed a preseason game after his young son died, and coach Joe Brady said the team will respect his privacy rather than cite an injury.
The Buffalo Bills confirmed that defensive tackle Ed Oliver was absent from Saturday's preseason game because he is dealing with the death of his young son, not an injury. The team had not announced the personal tragedy until the news was reported by media outlets on Friday, prompting the organization to address the situation publicly on Saturday.
Head coach Joe Brady told reporters, "I’m a parent, right? And ever since I found out, it’s really hard and I can’t fathom what he’s going through. As a coach, as a father, it’s my job to be what he needs right now, and that’s loving him and giving him the privacy that he deserves."
Brady added that the initial reports suggesting an injury were inaccurate, stating, "He’s not here right now because of an injury and he’s dealing with that. This wasn’t the reason why he’s not here."
The coach emphasized the team's commitment to supporting Oliver and respecting his wishes regarding how the situation is handled, while acknowledging the challenges journalists face in reporting sensitive personal matters.
