Director Jon Turteltaub confirms National Treasure 3 is moving forward
Jon Turteltaub announced that a third installment of the National Treasure franchise starring Nicolas Cage is officially in development, citing a completed script and renewed involvement of the original cast.
Director Jon Turteltaub told listeners of the National Treasure Hunt podcast that a third film in the franchise starring Nicolas Cage is officially underway. Speaking at a live taping in Philadelphia, the director said the project has a finished script approved by Disney and that most of the original cast is expected to return.
"It’s finally real. Now, it’s Hollywood real, meaning things could happen," Turteltaub said, adding that the sequel’s development had been delayed in part by the current political climate.
He recalled a recent phone call from former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy requesting a private screening for members of Congress, and noted that partisan interpretations of the series have become more pronounced online. Turteltaub said the new film will need to address political divisions without alienating audiences.
The announcement was made during Philadelphia’s first National Treasure weekend, which includes free screenings of the original movies and tours of local filming locations. No details about the plot or whether the sequel will feature scenes set in Philadelphia were provided.
