NFL memo bars cut players from signing after returning to college

The NFL said on 27 August that players who are cut and then return to college football are prohibited from signing an NFL contract or negotiating future deals until the following season. The memo follows the case of Cleveland Browns tight end Dae'Quan Wright, who became the first active NFL player to enter the NCAA transfer portal on 19 August after a court order granted him an extra year of college eligibility, CBS Sports reported.

The Browns placed him on waivers on 19 August, NBC Sports noted, and ESPN added that after clearing waivers he is set to rejoin LSU for the 2026 season. Bleacher Report said Wright cleared the waivers and is expected to resume his college career at LSU.
