Prince Harry and Meghan to Return to United Kingdom After Years in California

Summary

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to move back to the UK within weeks, enrolling their children in British schools, while remaining private, nonworking members of the royal family.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will leave their Montecito home in Southern California and relocate to the United Kingdom, a source familiar with the couple’s plans told NBC News. The move is expected within the next two weeks, as their children Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, have been enrolled in British schools starting in September. King Charles was informed of the decision on Sunday, and while he welcomed the chance to see more of the Sussex family privately, the couple will continue to be nonworking members of the royal family and will not reside in a royal palace.

A spokesperson for the couple declined to comment on the reasons for the relocation. The UK Home Office said it does not disclose details of security arrangements to avoid compromising safety. Meghan is expected to keep running her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from the UK.

The decision follows Harry’s July visit to the UK, during which a proposed stay at Buckingham Palace was cancelled over security concerns. The move aligns with Harry’s long-standing wish to have his children closer to family and to focus on his charitable work, which is largely based in Britain. Royal correspondent India McTaggart noted that Harry has been speaking more frequently with his father and that the relocation may simplify his charitable activities and reduce logistical complications.
