Cavaliers acquire Peyton Watson in five-team, $88 million sign-and-trade
The Cleveland Cavaliers received forward Peyton Watson and rookie Cam Whitmore in a five-team deal, giving Watson a four-year, $88 million contract, while the Denver Nuggets obtained a 2031 first-round pick and other assets.
Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, Washington and Charlotte completed a five-team trade on Wednesday. The Cavaliers acquired forward Peyton Watson and rookie Cam Whitmore; the Los Angeles Clippers received guard Max Strus; Denver obtained forward Julian Reese, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick from Cleveland and a second-round pick; Washington received guard Tre Mann, a second-round pick and cash considerations; and Charlotte added guard Dennis Schröder, incorporating a previously announced exchange for Tre Mann.
Watson signed a four-year, $88 million sign-and-trade contract with Cleveland, averaging $22 million per season, higher than the $17.5 million per year reportedly offered by Denver. The 23-year-old posted 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and a 41.1% three-point rate for Denver last season, but missed the playoffs after a hamstring injury.
The Cavaliers view Watson as a fit for their wing-three role, complementing James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, and frontcourt players Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. The team is also expected to waive Cam Whitmore, making him a free agent.
Denver received a future first-round pick and a second-rounder as part of a broader effort to manage salary-cap constraints, including the NBA’s second-apron luxury-tax threshold. The Nuggets remain committed to center Nikola Jokic, who is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract and is eligible for an extension.
The trade also gave the Clippers Max Strus, while Washington added Tre Mann and cash, and Charlotte acquired Dennis Schröder. The transaction reflects each franchise’s financial and roster-building strategies ahead of the upcoming season.
