Cavaliers Acquire Peyton Watson in Three-Team Trade Involving Nuggets and Clippers
The Cleveland Cavaliers obtained restricted free agent wing Peyton Watson from Denver in a three-team deal that also sent Max Strus to the Clippers and involved draft picks and cash considerations.
Cleveland received restricted free-agent wing Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets as part of a three-team transaction that also involved the Los Angeles Clippers. Watson is set to sign a four-year, $88 million contract with a player option and a 7.5% trade kicker. In the deal, the Cavaliers sent Max Strus to the Clippers, while Denver acquired a 2031 first-round pick from Cleveland and a 2032 second-round pick from the Kings. The Clippers received Strus on a $16.6 million expiring contract and retained a $17 million trade exception from a prior sign-and-trade.
Separately, Cleveland sent guard Tre Mann, a 2027 second-round pick acquired from the Clippers, and cash to the Washington Wizards in exchange for forward Cam Whitmore. The Wizards sent Julian Reese to Denver, who was subsequently waived.
Watson, a 23-year-old wing who averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks last season while shooting .491/.411/.730, is expected to provide athleticism and floor spacing for the Cavaliers. His career three-point percentage stands at 36.1%, though he has been a low-volume shooter.
The trade places Cleveland at the first salary-cap apron, leaving roughly $25.9 million of flexibility, which could be used to retain veteran point guard James Harden. Analysts note that waiving or stretching the newly acquired Tre Mann could create additional cap space and trade exceptions.
The Clippers added a veteran wing with playoff experience in Strus and gave up the draft rights to Ismael Kamagate, as well as a 2027 second-round pick previously obtained for Johnni Broome.
Denver’s next focus is reportedly free-agent forward DeMar DeRozan, who was waived by the Sacramento Kings after posting 18.4 points and 4.1 assists per game.
