Dallas Judge Rejects Karmelo Anthony's Retrial Request
Collin County Judge Michael Chitty denied Karmelo Anthony's request for a new trial on August 23 in Dallas, leaving his 35-year murder sentence for the 2025 stabbing of 17-year-old athlete Austin Metcalf intact and sending the case to the Fifth Court of Appeals. Earlier, AP News reported that a Texas appellate judge removed District Judge John Roach from the case. NewsNation said a new judge was assigned to hear the retrial request.
At a motion hearing, CBS News noted that prosecutors and defense lawyers presented extensive school and criminal records for both Anthony and Metcalf. PBS added that both sides agreed to keep certain evidence out of the original trial, a point central to the judge's decision.
