U.S. West Nile Virus Cases Surge, Tuolumne County Records First 2026 Infection
Tuolumne County health officials confirmed the state's first human West Nile virus infection of 2026, urging residents to take mosquito-bite prevention measures. Earlier, Los Angeles County health officials reported the first West Nile virus death of the year in the San Fernando Valley, also calling for mosquito protection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said more than 180 infections have been identified across 30 states this year, resulting in eight fatalities, with drought conditions cited as a possible factor in increased transmission.
