Ukraine launches more than 600 drones at Moscow as Russia warns Britain of consequences
Ukraine deployed over 600 drones against Moscow overnight, prompting Russian officials to warn the United Kingdom of retaliation for supplying long-range weapons.
Ukraine sent a wave of 637 drones toward Moscow overnight, the city's mayor said, describing it as one of the largest long-range assaults on the capital since the conflict began. Russian air defenses reported shooting down at least 180 drones in the Moscow region and intercepting more than 150 elsewhere in the country.
A high-rise building and a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, caught fire in the Moscow region. Ukrainian officials have targeted Wildberries facilities repeatedly in recent weeks, claiming to have disabled several of the company's major logistics sites.
No deaths were confirmed, though authorities said some people were injured. In a separate incident, Russian forces struck the Ukrainian city of Pechenhy in the Kharkiv region, killing ten people, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"We will definitely respond to this Russian strike," Zelenskyy wrote on X, adding that Ukraine expects its partners to increase pressure on Russia.
Russian officials also warned that the use of British-made drones in Ukraine could lead to consequences. The Russian embassy in London said reports of British drones being used in deep strikes indicated “London is deliberately opting for an escalation of the Ukraine crisis.”
The United Kingdom announced in April that it would supply 120,000 drones to Ukraine this year, including long-range strike, reconnaissance and logistics types. A Ministry of Defense spokesperson said Britain remains committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself.
"Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and we are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin's illegal invasion," the spokesperson told CBS News.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham reiterated the UK's support, stating that the assistance is intended to enable Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression.
