Diamondbacks keep Ketel Marte despite disciplinary and injury issues
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they will retain second baseman Ketel Marte on the major-league roster, despite his recent placement on the restricted list and ongoing off-field controversy, saying his on-field production and contract value justify the decision. Marte had been placed on the restricted list in early June after failing to report to Fenway Park for the opening game of the Boston series, prompting the club to recall infielder Jose Fernandez. He subsequently underwent a knee MRI in Phoenix and was moved to the 10-day injured list because of left-knee inflammation and a hamstring strain.
Manager Torey Lovullo later said the team does not require injured players to remain with the squad, noting a video that showed Marte at a nearby casino. The club indicated it expects to activate him on Aug. 31.
