Brian Hickerson issues statement after Hayden Panettiere's death investigation continues
Brian Hickerson, represented by an attorney, said the investigation into Hayden Panettiere's death will proceed without further comment, as police have found no signs of foul play.
Brian Hickerson, the on-and-off partner of actress Hayden Panettiere, released a statement through his attorney on Sunday, urging that the investigation into her death continue without interference. The Ellis Hinton law firm said, "Hayden's death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed. As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play. Out of respect for Hayden's loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time."
A police report confirmed that Hickerson and his brother, Zach, were present at the South Carolina apartment where Panettiere was found unresponsive on Sunday. A responding officer observed the brothers and noted that paramedics were performing CPR on the actress. The officer reported that the patient showed no obvious physical reasons for unresponsiveness and that no signs of trauma or foul play were evident during the autopsy.
"I observed Zach to be very emotional while EMS were working on Hayden. Brian did not become emotional until EMS declared her officially deceased," the officer said.
The cause of death has not been determined, though dispatch audio referenced possible overdose and cardiac arrest. The Greenville County Coroner's Office said the investigation remains active and no additional details will be released.
Panettiere, known for roles in "Heroes" and "Nashville," had a tumultuous relationship with Hickerson, who previously pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring her and served a short jail sentence. In 2020 she publicly addressed the abuse, stating she hoped her disclosure would help others in similar situations.
"I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments... I just feel that she's with her brother and they're at peace," said her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, in an interview with NBC News.
Panettiere's father, Skip, announced her death in a statement describing her as a beloved and influential figure. The investigation continues as authorities await further forensic results.
