Hayden Panettiere's mother comments on daughter's death and memoir
Lesley Vogel, Panettiere's estranged mother and former manager, discussed her daughter's death and the claims made in the actress's memoir, while noting the challenges faced by young entertainers.
Lesley Vogel, who managed Hayden Panettiere early in her career, spoke to NBC News about her daughter's death at age 36. Vogel said she believed the entertainment industry can be difficult for young people and that Panettiere may have lost her way, adding that she wishes her daughter had remained true to herself.
Panettiere's memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," released in May, describes a strained relationship with Vogel, accusing her of strict perfectionism and extreme measures such as re-attaching a fallen tooth to preserve a job. The book also claims Vogel pressured Panettiere to adopt more traditionally feminine clothing.
Following the memoir's publication, Vogel told Page Six that the controversy surrounding the book may be partly driven by sales motives. She said many parents of children in entertainment witness self-destructive behavior and that they cannot intervene if the individual does not want help.
