Five shot, one dead in downtown Lexington shooting, police say

Resumen

Police confirmed that five people were shot, including two children, at Charles Young Park in Lexington, with one victim later pronounced dead.

Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said a shooting occurred Saturday evening at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington, resulting in five victims. Among those injured were a four-year-old and a 14-year-old, while two adults sustained non-life-threatening wounds. The Fayette County Coroner's Office later confirmed one victim died at a hospital.

Police arrived at the 200 block of Midland Avenue at approximately 6:48 p.m., and firefighters were on scene a minute later. The street remains closed to the public as investigators continue their work.

Chief Weathers told reporters there is no ongoing threat to the community and urged anyone with information to contact the Lexington Police Department or submit anonymous tips to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers.

"If you know somebody who might be inclined to use a weapon, please do anything you can do to let us know before something happens," he said.

ONE Lexington director Devine Carama, whose organization seeks to curb gun violence, said he was close to the gunfire and observed first responders providing aid. Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council member Emma Curtis said the city is coordinating with police to implement its Emergency Mobilization Plan.
