Yahoo informó que tres migrantes murieron al intentar cruzar la frontera hacia el enclave español de Ceuta el 15 de agosto, elevando la cifra de fallecidos en la reciente oleada a al menos 90 personas. Las fuerzas de seguridad marroquíes habían detenido a más de 100 migrantes cerca de la frontera de Ceuta, empleando gas lacrimógeno tras llamados en redes sociales para un cruce masivo, y posteriormente arrestaron a 294 migrantes subsaharianos y a 61 presuntos facilitadores. El cruce masivo del 30 de julio había causado más de 140 muertos y dejó a miles de migrantes, muchos menores, en la ciudad de Ceuta.
