Cleveland Browns criticized over Watson contract and ownership decisions
The New York Times reported on August 25 that the Cleveland Browns were facing heightened criticism over the $230 million contract awarded to quarterback Deshaun Watson and over the role of the team’s owners and executives in the deal. Earlier, on August 22 the Browns played a preseason game in Chicago in which Watson, returning from an Achilles injury, completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards in the first half, while rookie Shedeur Sanders also saw action. NBC Sports noted that Watson accounted for all of the team’s points in the 34-10 loss.
The home crowd booed Watson during his first appearance, a reaction the quarterback described as disrespectful, according to the New York Times and ESPN. After the preseason competition, head coach Todd Monken announced on August 24 that Watson would start the regular-season opener, ending the quarterback debate.
