Seahawks sign cornerback Devon Witherspoon to four-year, $132 million extension

Resumen

Seattle awarded Devon Witherspoon a four-year, $132 million contract, making him the league’s highest-paid cornerback, after his strong play helped the team reach a second straight Super Bowl.

Seattle announced a four-year, $132 million extension with cornerback Devon Witherspoon, keeping the 25-year-old under contract through the 2031 season. The deal makes Witherspoon the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL.

Witherspoon, a former Illinois All-American, recorded 72 tackles, seven passes defended, two tackles for loss and an interception in the 2025 season and has been selected to the Pro Bowl for three consecutive years. Coaches and executives highlighted his versatility, noting his ability to cover outside receivers, play nickel, and blitz effectively.

"Devon Witherspoon … he’s a rare player. It’s his athletic ability, his speed, his playmaking, his mentality," former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said in April 2023.

"It’s hard to guard these guys, especially when you can’t touch them past five yards. When you’ve got a premier corner like that, you pay him," Witherspoon said on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”

The Seahawks’ front office, including president of football operations John Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald, indicated the extension reflects Witherspoon’s impact on both defense and team culture. The contract follows Seattle’s recent investments in other defensive players as the team seeks to maintain its defensive strength after reaching the Super Bowl.
