Seahawks lock up cornerback Devon Witherspoon with record $132 million extension
Seattle signed Witherspoon to a four-year, $132 million deal that makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, featuring over $101 million in guarantees.
Seattle announced on Saturday that cornerback Devon Witherspoon has agreed to a four-year extension worth $132 million, the largest total value ever for a defensive back. The contract includes more than $101 million in guarantees and an average annual salary of $33 million, surpassing the previous record held by Denzel Ward.
"The deal makes Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history," reported ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.
The agreement follows a series of recent high-value deals for the position, including Trent McDuffie's four-year, $124 million extension with the Los Angeles Rams earlier this year. Seattle had previously exercised Witherspoon's fifth-year option in March.
Witherspoon, a 25-year-old former Illinois standout selected fifth overall in the 2023 draft, has earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his three seasons. He posted 79 tackles, three sacks and 16 passes defended as a rookie, and recorded 98 tackles, nine passes defended and six tackles for loss in his second year. After missing part of the 2024 season with a knee injury, he returned to earn Second-Team All-Pro recognition, tallying 72 tackles, seven passes defended and four quarterback hits.
His contributions helped Seattle rank tenth in pass defense and lead the league in scoring defense, allowing just 17.2 points per game en route to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, where he added 17 tackles and four passes defended in three postseason games.
