Abrams' Agent Says Player Uncomfortable with Potential Shift to Second Base
C.J. Abrams' representative said the All-Star infielder is uneasy about a possible move to second base, while the Nationals plan a gradual transition at shortstop as Nasim Nunez assumes that role.
"Abrams is uneasy about the move to second base but is eager to put the team first," his agent told The Athletic.
The Washington Nationals expect Nasim Nunez to become the primary shortstop, with C.J. Abrams slated to shift gradually to second base later in the season. Team officials said Abrams has already discussed the plan and is supportive, though the transition will be phased in.
Abrams, 25, is having a breakout year, posting a .293/.364/.557 slash line with 25 home runs, 79 RBIs and 17 steals through 431 plate appearances. He leads the majors with 82 RBIs and ranks among the top 15 in runs, steals and batting average. The performance has placed him in the middle of trade speculation ahead of the August 3 deadline, though the club has not indicated an intention to move him.
In recent games, Abrams contributed multiple homers and RBIs, including a two-run double and a solo homer against the Nationals' opponents. His season totals include 29 home runs and 91 RBIs, putting him on pace for a potential 100-RBI season for the first time in his career.
The organization has not confirmed any definitive timeline for the position change, but indicated that Abrams will continue to play shortstop for the upcoming series while the shift to second base is evaluated.
