Trump pauses speech at police academy to console parents of Bronx shooting victim
President Donald Trump left a Nassau County Police Academy address to meet the parents of 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, who was killed by a stray bullet, and then returned to continue his remarks on crime.
President Donald Trump interrupted a speech at the Nassau County Police Academy on Friday after mentioning the death of 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, who was killed by a stray bullet while riding his bike in the Bronx. He stepped off the podium to embrace the boy’s mother, Migdalia Martinez, and his father, retired NYPD Sergeant Jesus Freytes, and exchanged a few private words with them before returning to the stage.
During his remarks, Trump linked the incident to his administration’s focus on reducing crime, noting that the shooting involved a repeat offender. He said the family were "incredible people" and expressed sympathy for the loss.
"Incredible. Horrible story. What a horrible thing," Trump said after returning to the podium, adding that authorities were pursuing those responsible.
New York officials have charged William Ferrer, 45, with multiple offenses including second-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Ferrer has pleaded not guilty and has a criminal record spanning more than two decades.
Republican lawmakers have proposed legislation dubbed “Jacob’s Law” that would increase penalties for offenders whose reckless actions result in a child’s death.
