Rookie quarterback Drew Allar throws three touchdowns in three second-half drives for Steelers preseason win

Résumé

Steelers rookie Drew Allar completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns in the second half of a preseason game against the Packers, while fellow rookie Will Howard also posted a strong debut.

Steelers rookie quarterback Drew Allar delivered a strong performance in the second half of Thursday night’s preseason matchup against the Green Bay Packers, engineering three scoring drives. The first drive covered 80 yards in five plays and ended with a three-yard touchdown run by Allar. The second drive moved 89 yards over 10 plays and concluded with a five-yard touchdown pass, and the third drive added 60 yards in 10 plays before a four-yard touchdown pass completed the sequence.

Allar finished the game completing 10 of 13 attempts for 153 yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, and posted a passer rating of 154.8. Fellow rookie quarterback Will Howard, a 2025 sixth-round pick, also made his preseason debut, completing 10 of 11 passes for 93 yards without a turnover.

The Steelers will need to decide which quarterback to retain on the 53-man roster, as they cannot keep all four quarterbacks. The performances of Allar and Howard could influence the decision, potentially affecting veteran Mason Rudolph’s status. Both rookies posted passer ratings above 100 in their 2026 preseason debuts.
