Wickford train derailment sparks widespread cancellations after Lewes incidents
A Greater Anglia commuter train derailed near Wickford, Essex on 11 August, injuring no passengers but prompting the evacuation of a second train and, by 14 August, causing widespread cancellations across the network, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said. The Wickford incident followed earlier derailments on the same day near Lewes in East Sussex. Initial reports from CNN and ABC News indicated no serious injuries, but NBC later reported that 20 passengers were injured in the Southern Rail service, highlighting the uncertainty in early accounts.
