Anthropic's $2 trillion valuation faces profitability gap
Analysts note that the AI startup Anthropic would need tens of billions in annual net profit to justify its $2 trillion market value, yet its projected earnings fall far short of that benchmark.
Anthropic, the artificial-intelligence firm backed by major investors, is being valued at roughly $2 trillion ahead of a potential initial public offering. At valuation multiples typical of large-cap Nasdaq 100 companies, the firm would need annual net earnings of between $59 billion and $79 billion to sustain that price, according to market calculations.
Current forecasts show Anthropic far below that threshold. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company expects second-quarter 2026 revenue of about $10.9 billion and anticipates posting an operating profit for the first time, but it has not yet generated net income.
For comparison, Amazon, whose market value is about $2.86 trillion, recorded $62.6 billion in net income on $200.6 billion of revenue in the most recent quarter. Anthropic’s projected earnings are therefore a fraction of what would be required to match such a valuation.
"Anthropic would need to post annual profits in the neighborhood of $59 billion to $79 billion to keep pace with valuation multiples common to large-cap companies," a Fortune analyst wrote.
The disparity has prompted scrutiny of the company’s financial outlook and the assumptions underlying its market price.
