Iran's foreign minister said President Trump has repeatedly miscalculated U.S. capabilities, while a senior U.S. analyst warned Tehran may become more aggressive ahead of the midterm elections.
Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters that President Donald Trump has "long miscalculated" U.S. intelligence regarding the Strait of Hormuz, after Trump claimed the United States has total control over the waterway. The comment came amid ongoing negotiations over a June interim agreement that is set to expire on Aug. 17, with an Iranian source saying Tehran sees no basis for extending the arrangement.
Retired Gen. Jack Keane, a senior strategic analyst for Fox News, said Iran is likely to adopt a more aggressive stance in the coming days, believing the president will be reluctant to take military action before the U.S. midterm elections. He added that the United States now has greater regional capability than it did at the end of February and that the decision to act rests with the president.
Both sides remain at an impasse over the terms for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane for global oil supplies.
