Families dispute Pentagon officials over reported conditions on USS Abraham Lincoln

Resumen

Family members of sailors on the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln say prolonged deployment has led to shortages of food, hygiene supplies and limited communication, contradicting statements from the White House and Pentagon that the reports are exaggerated.

Family members of crew aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln have described prolonged deployment since November 2025 as marked by food shortages, limited hygiene products, unreliable internet and delayed mail, while senior Navy officials and the White House have called the reports of substandard conditions exaggerated or false.

A senior machinist on the ship told relatives in early May that she might miss her son’s graduation because of unreliable internet, and her sister said the sailor had lost weight and experienced periods without soap or laundry detergent. Other sailors reported meals consisting of boiled carrots and processed meat, and some crew members allegedly attempted to jump overboard, though the Pentagon later said only one sailor fell and was recovered.

Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth and President Donald Trump dismissed the accounts as overblown, and a White House spokesperson said the president had restored focus on readiness and support for troops. Senator Richard Blumenthal, ranking member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, said he had heard “dramatically and directly” about shortages of food, clean water and basic supplies, adding that the uncertainty of the return date has caused serious anxiety for service members and their families.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao said media coverage was portraying sailors as victims and noted that a small number of mental-health cases had been treated, with no deaths reported. Democratic lawmakers have requested a clear timeline for the carrier’s return and a bipartisan delegation to inspect conditions. As the USS George Washington replaces the Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, families continue to seek answers and support for their loved ones aboard the ship.
